Create Something Sweet with an Upcycled Candle Jar

Do you have a lot of candles around your home like I do? What do you do with the jar once your candle has burned out? Put it to good use and create something sweet for Valentine’s Day like this decorated Valentine’s Day jar!

What You Will Need:

1. An old candle jar

2. Magazine

3. Tape

4. Hot glue gun/hot glue

5. Scrapbook paper. I used left over paper that I had from the Upcycle Your Chocolate Heart Box into Wall Art post. To make this project even more eco-friendly than it already is, you could use old book pages or sheet music. There are also several options for recycled scrapbook paper that you can check out, like the Green Stack Collection, Eco-Friendly Recycled Scrapbook Paper, and Recycled Kraft Paper for Scrapbooking.

6. Pen or permanent marker

7. Scissors

How To Do It:

1. Clean your candle jar. You can remove the wax by placing the candle in the freezer for about an hour or by running hot water on the bottom of the jar. I prefer the hot water method simply because it seems to be faster.

2. Cut out strips of your magazine. I cut mine from pages that had shades of pink or red to go along with the Valentine’s Day theme.

3. Line your magazine strips up and begin to weave them.

We turned ours over so that the tape would not show on the pretty pink/red side. Also, make sure you make it thick enough to cover the entire height of your candle jar. Once you have everything how you want it, tape your strips together so they stay in place.

4. Once you’re done weaving, tape it to your jar.

5. Trim the excess off the top.

Then, pout because it isn’t long enough to wrap completely around the jar. I was so concerned about the height of the jar that I  didn’t bother to check the length. My roommate suggested that we put a heart where the gap was. Fantastic idea, right?

6. Stop pouting and add the heart. First, though, we layered four magazine strips and taped them together. Then, we attached them to the heart so it comes out of the top.

7. Attach the heart using your hot glue gun. We didn’t tape it on because the tape didn’t blend in well.

8. If you want, you can add an arrow like we did. Just cut out two pieces like this:

And then hot glue it directly to the jar.

9. You can also add the word “love” by cutting out a rectangle from some scrap paper or scrapbook paper. Using a calligraphy pen, I wrote “love” on the rectangle. All that’s left is to hot glue the little rectangle to the heart. You’re finished!

The great thing about this project is that you can leave it out all year! You can also do many different things with it– it can become a pencil holder, you can put candy in it for Valentine’s Day and give it to a friend, or you can make your own rolled beeswax tealight candle to put in it. What would you put in this cute Valentine’s Day jar? Share your ideas on our facebook wall or in the comment section below!
