How-to: Make a Travel Tic Tac Toe Game

travel tic tac toe game
Why does X always seem to win?

As you can probably tell, I love recycled felt! It’s versatile, fun to work with, and its production keeps plastic bottles out of the landfill. Everybody wins!

You can also probably tell that I love making gifts for my nephews, and I’m working on a little care package for them, since we haven’t been able to visit in a while. They road trip pretty frequently, so I thought this tic tac toe game might help their momma keep the peace on long car rides.

The cool thing about felt is that it sticks to itself. The bond isn’t strong like Velcro, but for something like this, it should do the trick. Here’s what you need to make your travel tic tac toe game:

  • 1 9 x 12″ piece of felt
  • 1 7 x 5.5″ piece of felt
  • 1 more 9 x 12″ piece of felt in a contrasting color, or enough felt scraps to cut out the strips and letters (measurements in the directions below)
  • Sewing machine or needle and thread
  • Pins

Directions

1. Start by cutting your first piece of felt in half, so you’re left with two rectangles that are each 6 x 9″. Set one piece aside (that will be the front of your game), and grab the other, which is going to be the back.

2. Take your 7 x 5.5″ piece of felt and fold it in half so that you now have a square that’s 3.5 x 5.5″. Pin it to the 6 x 9″ piece to create a little back pouch. You want the unfinished side that’s opposite your fold to be flush with the bottom, like this:

3. Sew along the three unfinished sides of your pocket to secure it, and set the back piece aside. Make sure you back stitch on either end, so the pocket is nice and secure.

4. Grab your second 9 x 12″ piece of felt (or scraps), and cut out four pieces: two 6 x 0.5″ pieces and two 9 x 0.5″. These are going to make your criss-crosses on the board. Lay them down to form a # shape, and pin them like this:

5. Sew down your criss-cross by stitching down the center of each line in the grid.

6. Now, it’s time to make your X’s and O’s. You can do them freehand, like I did, or use our Tic Tac Toe template. Either way, you need five of each letter, and each letter is around 2 x 1.5″

That’s it! You’re ready to play a game of tic tac toe, or stash the letters in the back pouch for a fun road trip with the kiddos.
