A Review of The Right Brain Business Plan: A Creative, Visual Map for Success

The Right Brain book cover imageBecause a lot of crafters and artists that frequent this site are also small business owners I felt this book would be a perfect fit for reviewing here.

I too am a small business owner and I have balked at creating a business plan. I have flat out avoided it. I love designing promo materials, bookmarks, business cards, postcards, custom logos, t-shirts and all that. Just don’t ask me to type up a business plan. It sounds odd considering I am a writer and a crafter. Writing a business plan should be no big deal for me. But it is.

Numbers, charts, financial stuff, it makes my brain go blank. Sure I can add 1+1 and get 2 and figure out what needs to be done but the technical stuff. Well it flat out bores me to death. Eventually though I’m going to need it, especially if I want to grow my business or get investors.

Author Jennifer Lee has created a book for people like me, creative business owners that don’t want to do things the old fashioned way.

The Right Brain Business Plan shows us creative folks how to turn our passions and ideas into profitable enterprises.

Do you dream of making a living doing what you love but find the process of creating a viable business plan like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole? Jennifer Lee knows what it’s like to make the entrepreneurial leap — and how to do it successfully. The key is using, rather than stifling, imagination and intuition.

I love Jennifer Lee’s colorful and fully illustrated book filled step-by-step instructions that are playful yet practical. Creative thinkers will love seeing new ways to keep track of business files, charts, and ideas.

The ideas and projects Lee displays in this book will help you to define your vision so you can create useful plans for funding resources, marketing, networking, and even long-term business strategy.

Among the many things the right brainer will discover in this book are:

  • How to develop a financial plan that isn’t dry and boring
  • How to select and create a circle of support so you can get the work done
  • Learn how to clarify and set your business goals
  • Understand your competition
  • Decipher what makes you different, what makes you stand out from the crowd and learn to use it to your advantage
  • Learn how to identify your perfect customers, discover how to find them and how to reach them

This book is perfect for anyone who wants to take their arts and crafts hobby to the next level and become a business or for anyone who has been struggling with their creative business because they think creativity and good business sense don’t go hand and hand.

This book proves that’s not true. You’ve just got to do business your way, the creative way, the right brain way and learn how to do what works for you and your business.

  1. Thanks Wenona, good review. I think one of the reasons why many people find business planning hard is that it is usually presented as an entirely logical and non-creative process. When in truth there must be quite a bit of creativity involved (tempered with lots of careful craft sure – but that’s like any artistic process).
