A Review of Handmade Home by Amanda Blake Soule

Handmade Home: Simple Ways to Repurpose Old Materials into New Family Treasures by Amanda Blake Soule is the green craft book for those of you who love the shabby chic type of decor that not only feels comfortable but is almost necessary when you have small children.

The book is full of wonderful ways to use everyday discarded items and make them into heartfelt treasures, shabby chic decor, and fun family memories.

Handmade Home: Simple Ways to Repurpose Old Materials into New Family Treasures if filled with mostly sewing projects which makes it wonderful and hell all at the same time for a non-sewer like me because it has many great ideas I would love to utilize but I have not the knowledge or resources to do it (but 2010 is the year I will learn how to sew).

Many of the projects are so simple I can do with a basic needle and thread (which I can do, it’s just the machine that intimidates me).

I love the memory tree quilt art which utilizes pieces of fabric and fabric scraps and commemorates them into a piece of art. This could be done for one person or to symbolize the whole family. I think it is a great way to create something meaningful and memorable and use it as art. That way instead of tucking your memories into a box you instead have it on your wall to enjoy everyday.

The family heart is another nice family project that can easily add meaning and family togetherness, even tradition to your family and home.

If you like the sound of this book you might also want to check out Soule’s book The Creative Family: How to Encourage Imagination and Nurture Family Connections.

  1. LOVELY BOOK! I’m a 60 year old mother of four daughters and six grandchildren. I love this book. The directions for creating the items in the book were clear and easy to follow, even if you are a beginner. I love that I can create a project in a matter of hours or work with a child, and the project is special and will be treasured. This book takes me back to the 70’s when I was a new mother. Clearly, this book will be a classic along with Amanda’s other book “the creative family”. In a busy world where some mothers work outside the home, grandmothers and others can help create and nurture an environment that brings creativity and peace. ” Handmade Home” and” the Creative Family” would be great gifts for a baby shower. Long after the cute clothes etc. are forgotten, this book will still be in use.
