I haven't quilted before so I'm not certain - but aren't there other options available like sprays and liquid glues? I found this list of fabric adhesives: http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-fabric-adhesive.htm so maybe it's possible to substitute with a non-toxic option...

Does anyone know about the safety of using fusible interfacing for a baby quilt? I'm trying to attach animal patterns to quilt squares using a zig-zag stitch and the fabric is puckering. Everyone tells me to use fusible interfacing, but I don't want to poison my grandchild!

Thanks Skye, this is a really impressive and useful piece. Often however well intentioned we are it doesn't occur to us to scratch the surface of products we take for granted, or if it does, we don't know where to start. Anyone could use the process you've just outlined to investigate just about anything, and while it may not be an exhaustive study, as you say, it's enough to get the gist. Knowledge is power!
PS and thanks for writing back to one of my other comments

When I made my first t-shirt quilt I didn't use fuseable web (or interfacing for that matter because I'm a rebel baby!!!) and I didn't have any problem sewing the quilt squares together. I followed the seams of the squares when I quilted the quilt. After years of use, the contents haven't shifted and the quilt hasn't stretched out.
